DN42

SheepMC DN42

DN42 is a community-operated overlay network. SheepMC maintains separate DN42 routing resources strictly isolated from the public Internet.

Overview

About SheepMC DN42

DN42 is a community-operated overlay network used to learn and experiment with BGP, routing policy and network architecture.

SheepMC DN42 is strictly isolated from the public Internet AS218969. DN42 address space is not globally routable public Internet address space, and bidirectional route leakage is prohibited.

DN42 addresses are not globally routable Internet addresses. Route leakage in either direction is prohibited.

DN42 prefixes

IPv4 and IPv6 address space registered in the DN42 Registry.

IPv6

Registry route authorisation is intentionally aggregate-only. Per-site subnetting is managed internally and is not represented by public child registry objects.

Peering is by arrangement. WireGuard is preferred for tunnel transport, with BGP used for route exchange. Endpoint and session parameters are exchanged privately. Contact: noc@8u.nz.

Routing principles

Core principles

  1. 01
    Strict separation

Public Internet and DN42 routes are maintained in separate routing domains. Route leakage in either direction is prohibited.

  2. 02
    Reachable routes only

Each site may only originate address space that it can actually reach.

  3. 03
    No false aggregate reachability

Disconnected sites must not advertise a shared aggregate when they cannot forward traffic to the complete aggregate.

  4. 04
    Internal subnetting

Per-site subnetting remains an internal implementation detail and is published only when operationally necessary.
